Availon acquires wind energy activities of Voith Industrial Services
With effect from July 20102, Availon GmbH, one of the leading independent providers of services for wind turbine generators (WTGs) in Europe, is acquiring the wind service activities of Voith Industrial Services GmbH. The competition authorities have already approved the takeover.
This acquisition will enable Availon to significantly strengthen and expand its leading position in the field of cross-brand WTG services.
Availon, which has its headquarters in Rheine, Germany, and currently employs over 200 people in Germany, Spain, Italy and the USA, is responsible for servicing WTGs with a total power output in excess of 1,300 MW.
As a member of the Voith Group, Voith Industrial Services GmbH in Rerik has hitherto offered complete service packages for wind turbine generators made by GE, Vestas, Gamesa, Nordex and DeWind. With a network of service centers in Germany and Austria, the cross-brand service supplier has around 350 WTGs under contract.
“We see clear synergies between the two companies as both Availon and Voith Industrial Services Wind look after WTGs from manufacturers GE, Vestas and Gamesa. With this takeover, Availon is now systematically expanding its service portfolio, with the ability to offer its high technological competence for systems from five WTG manufacturers,” states Availon CEO Ulrich Schomakers.
Thanks to this step, all Availon customers will in future be able to benefit from an even denser service network, and hence shorter travel times, combined with the time-tested and highly sophisticated replacement parts logistics system already in place. Through the takeover of Voith Industrial Services Wind, Availon can additionally expand its regional activities to include Austria.
As the reason for divesting itself of its wind energy activities, Voith points to its strategic focus on the key industrial sectors of automotive, energy and petrochemicals. In the field of power generation, industrial service provider Voith is concentrating on large and medium-sized power stations. “We are convinced that Availon, with its technological leadership, comprehensive service know-how and modular service packages that can be tailored to the individual customers’ needs, will be a good partner for our existing customers. The synergy potential of the two companies in the field of wind energy will significantly foster integration,” says Norbert Nettesheim, CEO of Voith Industrial Services Holding GmbH & Co. KG.
“The high level of customer satisfaction and the commitment and motivation of our employees are the guarantors for the success of Availon. The operators of WTGs from Nordex and DeWind will therefore also benefit in future from our tried and tested service concepts and the sustained and continuous optimization of their WTGs,” emphasizes Ulrich Schomakers.
