Availon now also certified to ISO 14001. Integrated management system now also includes environmental protection activities
After being confirmed by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) in August 2011 as one of the first cross-brand providers of services for wind turbine generators to have an integrated management system in compliance with ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 in place, Availon has now also received certification from GL in accordance with ISO 14001.
This means that the management system in operation at Availon in relation to quality assurance and occupational health and safety has also been supplemented by activities in the environmental protection field, with the Rheine-based company now meeting the internationally recognized requirements in this area.
The purpose of ISO 14001 is to encourage businesses to establish a company environmental policy and to define goals for meeting this within an environmental program. The introduction of a corresponding environmental management system is intended to assist the companies concerned in achieving the goals they have adopted.
In the course of the one-week audit, which was conducted in July 2012, GL scrutinized all aspects and activities of Availon of relevance for the environment and reviewed the effectiveness of the measures adopted by the company for achieving its goals.
Olaf Kleesch, Director Global Technical Support & Engineering at Availon, states in this context: “The catalogue of measures needed to obtain certification was very long, with the audit focusing in particular on the areas of storage logistics and the disposal of waste and pollutants. The equipment of the service vehicles used by our fitters was also reviewed in the process. As a result, the vehicles have now been equipped, among other things, with a collection tray for pollutants. We have also optimized the equipment of the service vehicles to make working more ergonomic for the staff. Additionally, governors have been fitted to limit the top speed of the vehicles to 130 km/h, meaning that we not only save fuel but also make a sustainable contribution to the environment by reducing our level of CO2 emissions.“
As part of the initial certification for ISO 14001, a review audit was also undertaken under ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001. “According to the audit report, the Availon management system was established as being in conformity with the requirements of standards ISO 9001:2008, DIN EN ISO 14001:2009 and BS OHSAS 18001:2007. Just how seriously Availon takes the implementation of an integrated management system that meets these standards can also be seen from the fact that our audit did not reveal any non-conformities whatsoever; rather, it confirmed that the management system has been implemented professionally and in full,“ states Daniel Wilhelm of GL Systems Certification.
The certificate of conformity with ISO 14001 was presented to Olaf Kleesch by Daniel Wilhelm of GL at HUSUM WindEnergy 2012.
